UK New Immigration Rules: Refugees Arriving Illegally Won’t Get Citizenship
New rules mean refugees who come on small boats won’t get British citizenship. If you come to the UK illegally – by boat, in a car or any other way – your citizenship application will probably be refused. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here.
These rules came in on 10 February 2025. You came to the UK illegally even if you’ve been here for years you won’t get citizenship. The rules are clear: if you came illegally you’ll be refused citizenship no matter what.
Before, you could apply for citizenship after 10 years if you came in this way. Now you can’t. Although UK law has always said it’s illegal to enter without permission, these new rules are scary. International law says refugees shouldn’t be punished for coming in without permission.
Many disagree with these changes. The Refugee Council says over 70,000 refugees will be stopped from becoming British citizens. The charity’s CEO, Enver Solomon, called it “irrational” and asked the government to think again. He pointed out that refugees want to settle and help their new communities.

Some Labour MPs have spoken out too. MP Stella Creasy said the new rules will make refugees “second class citizens” forever. Immigration lawyer Colin Yeo said the rules are against international refugee rights.
These changes are part of the UK’s plan to reduce illegal immigration and toughen up border controls. The Labour-backed Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill is also on the table. This bill will stop people smugglers and stop dangerous Channel crossings. It will also introduce harsh penalties for anyone who puts lives at risk during illegal crossings.
Despite the backlash, the government says the rules are needed for national security and control of immigration. Many are urging the government to rethink and adopt more humane policies to help refugees rebuild their lives in the UK.
